Michelle Nowak - Farm Manager

What's your favorite thing to do on the farm?

So hard to choose, but one of my favorite things is stumbling upon tiny nature dramas that are unfolding in the insect world and trying to figure out what is going on when I see something that's new to me.

What's your least favorite thing?

Failing to grow beautiful, healthy crops because of unsuccessfully managing pests, disease, or heat.

What veg do you like to eat raw?

Carrots and cucumbers.

If you could fill an entire field of what produce, what would it be?

Winter squash. I love the varieties of sizes, shapes, and colors, it's so delicious, and it keeps for months and months.

When did you start growing veggies?

We always had a little garden when I was growing up. We moved when I was 12 and left our old garden so I asked for a new one for my birthday.

What's something you WANT to learn on the farm?

How to better interpret soil tests.

What's one thing you want people to know about what you do (if they've never done it before)?

There are so many lifetimes of learning in farming. I've been doing it a long time but still have so many failures and challenges.

What's your superpower?

Uhhhhhh.... (We believe Michelle’s superpower is her hard work, passion and constant dedication to both the land and her team. Her calming presence in any situation always comforts us on the farm!)

Who's your favorite author / musician / artist?

Mary Oliver is my favorite poet.

Give us a recipe!

I constantly roast things in the oven. It's so easy and simple and makes everything taste great.

Works with all root vegetables, tomatoes, kohlrabi, zucchini, eggplant, peppers, winter squash, broccolini... just slice thinly, spread out on a sheet pan, drizzle with olive oil, salt, pepper, and fresh herbs, and roast at 350-450 until tender when pierced with a fork.
